Week 34: Excuses

If you're wondering what The Impossible Goal is, you can read about it here.

I'm too tired.
The fingernail on my final L finger ripped off below the quick, so it aches when I write.
I drank too much.
We had a busy day.
There was a death in the family.
When I put a pizza in the oven, I accidentally touched the heating element, and now I've got a blister on my initial P fingertip.
Doctor Who is on tonight.
I already shut down my computer.
I wrote on the job for 6 hours today.
I just took the dogs out to potty, and they took their own sweet time finding JUST THE PERFECT SPOT, so now my fingers are frozen (even with gloves) and can't hardly move.
I don't like the subject material on the Magnum Steno video of the day, and since our ISP has data caps, I can't watch a different one.
I've got plenty of time before the Guinness attempt.

ETA: I have a cat on my lap.

  1. Hi Kathryn, I enjoyed reading your posts. I have been making most of the excuses you mentioned here. You reminded me that I needed to speed up my practice MUCH more than I have been doing. I have been at a plateau or an unmotivated state for several months now and could not pass 120. I am a new student as you can see so when you say you are doing 350 or 425 that sounds crazy to me! I hope I will get up to there soon enough. Can you tell me, when you practice at these higher speeds, are you practicing one particular dictation over and over and increase the speed for that? Do you do high speeds on easy material or do you throw in Literary materials with new, harder words? Thank you.

  2. I've been doing one Q&A dictation a day over and over, from the Magnum Steno Club. http://www.magnumsteno.com We have daily data restrictions from our Internet service, (no cable services available for our half-mile stretch of the road) so I can only do one of these dictations a day or there won't be enough data allowance left for me or my husband to surf the Web! If we had unlimited data, I'd certainly do new material all the time, maybe repeating a dictation take once at the end of the day just for the heck of it.

I speed it up to 450 and do not decrease that speed except on Sundays, where I back it off to maybe 330 and see how I'm progressing. I'm definitely NOT getting all the material down at 450, but I'm getting more and more every day.

I'm practicing only Q&A, since the speed record attempt will be Q&A.

    Hope this helps!
